Suzanne Laurie, a woman passionate about empowering ladies and helping them find their inner sparkle, has been in the wellness industry for over twenty years.
A nutritional therapist and positive psychology coach, Suzanne likes to keep things doable for women by “cutting to the basics”. Having gone into perimenopause, and felt underprepared even as a wellness professional, she explains that she “started to research and ended up teaming up with an Acupuncture specialist who was in the same boat. We worked together to ensure other women didn’t need to go through it alone. We then just started to get the word out.”
She feels the information available about menopause can be: “faddish and very HRT-focused. HRT is a really helpful tool but there is not enough emphasis on the power of nutrition, lifestyle and mindset”.
Suzanne’s Instagram page is testimony to the good work she is doing. Based in Spain for the last 16 years, she says “I use my knowledge locally but also online with clients across the UK and Ireland.”
‘Mother Flushing Midlife’ is the title of not just her business but her social media accounts. I asked her why?
“I came up with the title, just chatting to my friend, I have to admit our conversation did get a bit sweary! So instead of mother f***ing, it’s mother flushing mid-life!. My main goal is to help women understand their options whilst empowering them to make simple but effective changes to enhance their health now but also into the future.”
You may be asking yourself, how does this relate to padel?
A fellow friend, Abbey Rose (see earlier blog post) who completed our CPC coaching course a few months ago was the reason for Suzanne getting into the sport.
Suzanne explains: “It was all down to Abbey that I got involved – she hammered on about how good it was, I finally caved in and got a lesson! I’ve never really taken to any racket sports as I told myself I don’t have any hand-eye coordination. But with padel it doesn’t matter! I went from a standing start which just shows how easy it is to pick up. I loved how you can start from scratch and play with people of all different abilities.”
Padel is the ideal sport for relieving symptoms of menopause: “Exercise is a key factor in reducing menopausal symptoms, general wellbeing and for increasing life expectancy. With padel there is a perfect mix of cardio, strength, resistance and flexibility training. Not only this but the social aspect, being around people, outside, moving, it's the ideal remedy for menopause.”
And not just for the ladies: “My kids love it too, it’s great for the whole family to get involved. My sons are 11 and 8 and they really enjoy it.”
Finally, we chatted about the famous Breakfast Club which takes place every Tuesday at our venue, Oliva Nova. “I am a hardcore breakfast club attendee, it’s the ultimate, fun padel, showing that the sport is for everyone. It’s just nice to see this ethos which Abbey has created.”
Really, what’s not to like? Padel, coffee and breakfast, sounds like the perfect morning!
Suzanne is a great example, that menopause or mid-life is not the end of your social or sporting life, having first picked up a padel racket at age 46. Having caught the padel bug, Suzanne is now helping Abbey with her ‘No pressure padel’ classes which are all about encouraging women to get involved. The dynamic duo will be continuing to empower women at their local club, Oliva Nova and across social media.
Let this be your sign that you can do it!
Thanks to Suzanne Laurie for chatting with us. It was a pleasure to hear all about her work and how padel can be a remedy for menopause or anything else that life throws at you!
